The Governor of Svalbard today decided to lift the ban on entry and residence that was imposed on 24 February this year for the Lia-area .

This means that the evacuees now have full access to their homes, and that residence in the area is no longer prohibited.

The Governor's decision is based on avalache expert assessments.

For the record, The Governor informs that at new ban on access and entry will be imposed for the same area, as soon as snow covers the ground this coming autumn. Unless avalanche protection measures are taken for the buildings in question, the ban on access and entry will then be maintained as long as the ground is covered by snow.

Questions regarding access to the damaged buildings in Road 228 6-16 are referred to Longyearbyen Community Council.
