Before you can take the theory test, you must have your driver's license application approved. This is done electronically via the Norwegian Public Roads Administration's Svalbard service office (see link on the right).

Basic training and driving tests
Practical driving training for class S is carried out in Svalbard by an approved traffic school. Practical driving training in other classes must be carried out on the mainland.

Driving licence for category S – snow scooter
If you have qualified for a driving licence in categories A, A1, B and T you are also permitted to drive snow scooters (category S)

Foreign driving licence in Svalbard
Holders of a foreign driving license that is valid in the issuing country can use such a driving license corresponding to the driving license classes in the driving license regulations chapter 3, with the exception of class T, during the entire stay in Svalbard. The driver's license must be issued in a country that has joined the Geneva Convention of 1949 or the Vienna Convention of 1968 on road traffic, and it must be of the model required by the aforementioned conventions. Driving licenses according to the national model from countries that have joined the above-mentioned conventions are accepted, if an authorized translation into a Norwegian or international driving license is included.

A driving license for passenger car/class B also gives a driving license for class S (snowmobile).

Driving licenses can also be accepted from other states and are then valid for driving for up to three months in Svalbard. Driving licenses are accepted if they are in accordance with one of the models from the conventions and issued in a Scandinavian language, or English, French or German.

International driver's license is accepted, together with a valid national driver's license.

You can find an overview of countries that have joined the Geneva Convention of 1949 or the Vienna Convention of 1968 via the links on the right.
